The first step into community game-making

Unlocking Creativity: A Guide to Game-Making for Educators

Explore: Threadbare is the flagship entry point into our learning programs. It gives educators and facilitators everything they need to introduce learners to game-making in a way that is simple, playful, and powerful. With ready-to-use, Creative Commons-licensed materials that are free to access, anyone can run this session and help learners take their first steps as creators. Yes, you read that right, the learning materials are free!

Why Explore: Threadbare Matters

Explore: Threadbare is not just an introduction to community game-making, it is the gateway into Threadbare itself, our super cool and unique open source fantasy adventure where learners are creators, not just players.

Learners begin with small, hands-on projects like designing game graphics, building environments, or writing dialogue. Each activity connects directly to the game world, showing them how their work can become part of a living game. This early spark builds confidence and sets the stage for deeper pathways in Core:Threadbare and More:Threadbare.

Alternative

Mini Explore: MakeCode

Not ready to use Godot yet? We created an alternative Explore course which is available using Microsoft MakeCode. Learners can dive into block-based coding to create their own games quickly and visually. This lighter option is flexible and fun, and it can serve as a stepping stone toward Explore:Threadbare.

Languages

Explore: Threadbare and Mini Explore materials are available in English and Spanish and can be delivered in classrooms, clubs, or community spaces. Programs can connect learners to our global online community, or they can be run locally in schools and clubs where internet access is limited. In both cases, learners can create, contribute, and share their work, building either a local game-making community or joining the wider global one.
